Blast Off!

Posted on: 17/03/2021

As part of our Spacegazers topic, Year 5 were set a mission by the UK Space Agency to design and launch a rocket for a space mission. We spent a week identifying the features and parts of a rocket to ensure our rocket designs were accurate and would be successful. We then built our rockets and launched them into Space! We used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to create a reaction of carbon dioxide and water. The cork stops the carbon dioxide from escaping so the pressure builds up until it pops the cork and the water and gas escape. As the contents of the bottle shoot downward, the bottle itself shoots upward demonstrating Newton’s Third Law of Motion: “for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction”. Great fun was had by all!
